As the extensive milling and partial resurfacing work of U.S. Hwy. 59 through Cherokee continues, many area motorists are wondering what all the cut-outs and  repaved portions represent.

Dakin Schultz, an IDOT district transportation planner from Sioux City, said contractors who’ve been on the job since spring completed the dowel bar retro fit last Thursday, that further secures the pavement sections. The patching around the bars is a concrete material and intentionally left a little high.  Those are the cut-outs many motorists and residents are wondering about.

The contractor completed the full depth patching Friday.

On Aug. 15, diamond grinding on the existing concrete surface will begin and should take approximately four weeks to complete. Asphalt resurfacing will begin upon completion of the pavement grinding and occur where the existing road surface is asphalt. Once that is complete, there will be joint and crack clean and fill.

A specific project completion date is not known, according to Schultz. Original scheduling had an August completion date.

In 2013-14 resurfacing of Hwy. 59 from the Ida County line north to C44 was completed. Earlier this year the resurfacing of Hwy. 59 from Cherokee north to Iowa Hwy. 10 was completed.

The current road and bridge work is part of IDOT’s $30  million five-year construction plan for Cherokee County. Input and appeals from CAEDC and city and county officials, helped initiate the beneficial road projects in the county.
