We set out to determine the position of the model in the field of cordless grinding machines. The Flex 24V brushless cordless 5-inch angle grinder competes very well with high-quality professional models in the small angle grinder category. It is not on the same level as the cordless 6-inch grinder, but this is not the purpose of its design. We prefer its slimmer handle design, and some speed control is also very good. However, what really sets it apart is the value of the kit. Compared with bare metal, Flex only charges an additional $70 for the battery and charger, which makes the kit significantly lower than its competitors.
We have been learning about the launch of Flex cordless tools as a new product and have been impressed by what we have seen so far. One of the questions we have been trying to answer in every review is "Where does Flex fit?" When we took a closer look at the Flex 24V brushless cordless 5-inch angle grinder, we were deeply moved.
Flex designed their first cordless grinder with a maximum speed of 10,000 RPM. This is quite high, they have designed four electronic speed settings to help you control the speed if you need to lower the speed.
However, the speed is only impressive when the tool can withstand the load. We tried various cutting, grinding and polishing to see how it compares with other 5-inch cordless grinders we have used.
The power level at this level is impressive. We were able to get the wheel into trouble as we moved forward, but its support was the same as any other model we used in the 5-inch class. When we turned our attention from cutting 1/4-inch angle iron to grinding away some top layers, we were impressed by the speed at which it removed material. Switch to the clamshell tray, it left us with a beautiful polished luster.
We used the 5.0Ah battery in the kit for most of the tests, and we recommend that you stick to it. Once we use it up, we put it on the charger, it does not require any cooling time before starting to charge. We switch to a 2.5Ah battery, which is obviously easier to get the wheels into trouble. You can enjoy lighter weight in the lightest tasks, but stick to the 5.0Ah backpack when you do medium and heavy tasks.
Compared with many small angle grinders, Flex has a slimmer handle design, which is a move we like. In combination with overmolding at all suitable positions, it can provide a firm grip when you grind and cut at various angles.
Compared with large angle grinders, one of the advantages of small angle grinders is weight reduction. Without batteries and side handles, this model weighs 4.3 pounds, and it weighs 6.4 pounds with a 5.0Ah battery.
There are two types of Flex grinders. They are almost the same except how you use the power supply. The model we are reviewing has a toggle switch. The other uses an on/off slide switch.
This Flex cordless grinder makes it so easy to adjust the protective cover. Just rotate it counterclockwise (if you look down from the top) until it reaches the position you are looking for. To remove it, rotate it so that the guard protrudes directly from the tool, and you will feel it loose to a position where it can be replaced.
In the Flex world, Shockshield is their term for vibration suppression. In this case, it is located on the side handle. There is a separation near where it is connected to the tool, which can dampen some vibrations before reaching your hand.
The handle is mounted on the left or right side, but there is no central top mounting point.
Flex includes a recoil sensor on the tool. If you tie the wheel or it recoils you, the motor will stop automatically. Despite this control, there is no rapid electronic brake when you release the switch. It takes about 2.5 seconds for the 27 wheel to stop, so it is not as slow as some.
No matter which style you want to use, the kit is priced at US$249 and comes with a 5.0Ah battery, fast charger and tool kit. If you already use the platform, the price of bare metal tools is $179. Compared with other premium brands in the same performance range, its value is considerable.
