A small plane that encountered a mechanical failure over Tallahassee crashed on Tramway and the Metropolitan Area this morning. No one was injured.

Tallahassee International Airport’s Deputy Director of Aviation, Jim Devin, said that a Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft with only pilots encountered a “mechanical failure” while flying from the St. Petersburg area to Columbus, Georgia.

"They therefore declared an emergency on board... They are trying to transfer to Tallahassee International Airport. The plane did not arrive at the airport, but crashed on the tramway at about 7:55 in the morning."

Devin said the six-seater single-engine plane crashed in the wooded area south of the state office building and SouthWood near the Crowder bunker.

Tallahassee Police Station, Tallahassee Fire Department, Leon County Sheriff’s Office, emergency medical services, and airport staff all rushed to the scene.

"The pilot does not appear to be injured," Devin said. "As a precaution, he was taken to the hospital for examination."

Melba Phillips was taking her daughter to Florida State University school when she saw a plane flying over Four Oaks Boulevard. She noticed that the plane was flying "very low" and the front blades were not spinning.

"I think it's weird and a little scary," she said in an email. "I'm glad the pilot is safe."

This is the second small plane crash in Tallahassee in about a month.

On November 4th, as part of the Tuskegee pilot’s touring exhibition, the old P-51 Mustang in the town crashed while landing at the airport. Although the crash caused commercial air traffic to be grounded for several hours, no one was injured.

According to FAA records, the plane that crashed on the tramway was registered with Aeromed Transport Co., LLC in Thomasville, Georgia.

Devin said that the crash had no impact on airport operations.

"The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have received notifications," he said. "Prior to coordinating with these two agencies, law enforcement agencies are protecting the scene."
