Could a Blade and Morbius Crossover Movie Be Possible?

The Sony Marvel Cinematic Universe gained massive success this past weekend after the long-anticipated release of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Especially after breaking box office records and opening at 600.8 M around the globe. It seems the hype for NWH stood its ground and served us well. With an insane amount of crossovers and nostalgia at a full-time high, it’s very clear these mashups are working in the companies’ favor. Now all eyes are on producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige as we ask; What’s next for the future of Sony and Marvel?

According to both Pascal and Feige, a Blade and Morbius crossover could be a possibility.

If you were one of the many fans that avoided spoilers and saw No Way Home this past weekend, you might’ve had to sit patiently and wait for the main feature as a few trailers went by. In those lasting minutes (that felt like forever) you probably noticed a few upcoming features, some Marvel some not. Across all of them, you might have noticed a few recognizable faces, especially for one trailer in particular – Morbius! Academy award-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars band member Jared Leto will be starring as Dr. Michael Morbius in ‘Morbius’ as Marvels’ famous crazed vampire-doctor.  This Sony Spider-verse addition’s final trailer dropped earlier in November 2021 and the full feature will be released a month from now on January 28th, 2022!

A little background on Morbius – he’s a biochemist with a rare blood disease who tries to help others with the same illness. While searching for a cure, he finds one but inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead. He’s turned into a creature with fangs, super strength, and (just like every vampire from Edward Cullen to Lady Gaga’s Countess) possesses the need to drink blood. He first appears in the 1971 comic, The Amazing Spiderman #101 and is commonly known as Morbius, the Living Vampire. In 2019, Morbius got his own solo comic book series.

In common with Venom, he starts as a villain in the Spiderman comics, but Marvel/Sony has a funny way of making us like the “half-bad guys” in the end. As we can see in the trailer, it seems he struggles to control himself in this new state as he walks a fine line between hero and villain. Ah, our lovable anti-heroes. After all, there’s got to be a cure for all of them, right Spider-Man?

Leto has teased crossover events and multiverse involvement for Morbius as he discussed his new character at Brazil CCXP 2021. Leto said, “In the film version of Morbius that we’re bringing to you now, he’s also a part of a much larger universe. If you’ve seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the Multiverse has officially opened, and there are all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up, thrive, and maybe even nurture their more sinister intents. That’s all I’m gonna say for right now.” Very sneaky Jared, we see you!

Leto’s particular choice of words also teased at the possibility of “The Sinister Six” eventually making it to the big screen. Only time will tell, but things are looking bright!

The new Blade movies are rebooting the super-human vampire hunter and setting him in the MCU. The previous Blade trilogy starred Wesley Snipes as the lead in all three movies (Blade, Blade II, and Blade: Trinity) from 1998-2004. Snipes starred as Marvel’s iconic half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter and slayed the screen for years searching for the vampire that killed his mother and turned him into a monster(fuel for destruction – amirite). Our new MCU Blade will be played by none other than two-time Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali of Moonlight and The Green Book. Ali’s involvement in the reboot was confirmed back in 2019 at the San Diego Comic-Con. According to the L.A. Times, when asked about the project as of now, Ali stays relatively quiet. Ali says, he “doesn’t really have anything to offer yet that is truly worth anyone’s time,” regarding new information about the movie.

Ali’s Blade officially debuted in a “Eternals” after-credits scene with a voice-only cameo.

In recent speculation, reports say Blade will start filming in the Summer of 2022. There’s no confirmation of a projected release date for the film. Fans are hoping for the film to drop in the next two years or so. We don’t know much more info, but when we do get updated, be sure to check out The Nerd Stash!

With Morbius being a “vampire” and Blade being a “vampire-human hybrid slayer”, that’s some pretty great conflict already that’s perfect for a crossover. It’s like they’re meant to share the screen! They’ll fight, become frenemies, then friends and ultimately fight something bigger than the both of them (if the movies run differently than the comics). It’s not confirmed whether Morbius and Blade are living in the same universe, but who knows for sure. Anything is possible, especially now with the multiverse revealed.

In an interview with Geeks of Color, both Pascal and Feige showed a lot of interest when asked by Dorian about a possible Blade and Morbius team-up. As Pascal says, “Blade and Morbius, that’s a cool idea. You know the future, you never know what’s going to happen. There are all sorts of possibilities.”

I’m very excited to see what’s to come for the future of the MCU and Sony’s interaction. I see a lot of crossovers in our future. For reference, Doctor Strange in No Way Home, our favorite Scarlett Witch mama Wanda showing up in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’  and even with Michael Keaton’s Vulture returning in the Morbius trailer! It will also be interesting to see where Eddy Brock/Venom end up and who they end up with.
